Garmin inReach Explorer+ Review

Editor’s Rating: 8/10

This GPS hunting tracker is truly different from all else in the industry in more ways than one, beginning with the shape itself that makes it look like a walkie talkie and also comes features similar to one. This satellite communicator would enable two-way text messaging, this becomes a huge game changer in the GPS hunting trackers.

You would be able to do so with the global Iridium Satellite Network which unfortunately would require a subscription. Another exciting feature is the interactive SOS trigger that the tracker comes with, alarming the 24/7 search and rescue monitors it connects to. The tracker therefore can be seen thus far as being more than just a GPS tracker with other handy features as well, suitable for hunting activities as long as you maximize its potential.

Key takeaways:

  • Enables you to connect with more people around you
  • Highly durable with a great versatility

The Garmin powered tracker comes with a tough, impact resistant and durable overall body, carrying one of these out in the woods for hunting shouldn’t be a problem. Besides that it comes with a water rating of IPX7 which is fairly good for activities like hunting, you will have a fully functional PS throughout your day. It has a display resolution of 200 x 265 pixels which makes it very clear for your viewing pleasure, reading during daytime? No problem.

Not to mention that the tracker comes with a barometric altimeter sensor, which becomes really helpful in cases where details matter to you, finding out your elevation wouldn’t be a problem.

The battery life of this tracker is determined by its rechargeable lithium battery pack which can last surprisingly long especially given that it comes with so many additional features and functions. With the tracker running on the 10-minute tracking mode which is a default the tracker would be able to last up to 100 hours, with the 10 minute tracking mode along with the1-second logging off the tracker will survive up to 75 hours, with the 30-minute interval power save mode the tracker will be able to survive a whooping 30 days in total and finally with the power being switched off the tracker will survive for a total of 3 years.

The point of the numbers being mentioned and even the longevity when it is turned of being said it is to present the technology that Garmin uses to prolong battery life and be as efficient as possible.

The inReach Explorer+ comes with a full-fledged GPS on-map guidance along with a preloaded TOPO waypoints and mapping routings which will be directly viewable on the unit. Being guided is one thing but doing it with detail is another, the inReach does just that, navigating with one of these would give you a different and special experience.

Not to mention the built-in digital compass, accelerometer and barometric altimeter which are all included with the Explorer+, only helping you to maintain and get accurate bearings on the places that are both remote and dense in most situations. The optional weather forecast service also provides you with details directly to your inReach device which is compatible to your phones which are paired with the Earthmate app.

The biggest component of the tracker itself comes here as it is more than just a GPS tracker, using the worldwide coverage of the iridium satellite network you will be able to go anywhere and still have the ability to exchange text messages with any email address or phone numbers. Other than that you can also share the tracking of your hunts on social media or even communicate with one another with the same device in the field.

Also to be mentioned is the fact that you don’t have to worry about cell tower or phone services for your texting abilities, it all happens here with the Iridium Satellite Network. Your friends and family members will also be able to keep up with tour progress through the web-based MapShare portal. Communicating is made much easier and your safety is being ensured through all that the inReach enables you to do.
